Our new GoPro dog mount just arrived! We tried it out on Riley yesterday (always an eager volunteer). #rileycam. Now that we have three golden retrievers here, we’ll have lots of fun with more videos during summer camp! Would your dog wear this?

The last day was a very busy one! We had our last breakfast of rice and beans and then loaded our luggage onto our bus, and off we went to Mombacho Volcano. There, we had the opportunity to zipline down the dormant volcano. This was a highlight for sure as we went zipping through the trees and even saw howler monkeys! Afterward, we headed to Messiah Market, which is a popular market for souvenir shopping located in an old fort. We broke up into groups and tried our hand at bartering, but with our limited Spanish and experience, we weren’t…

The next day, started with a yummy breakfast of…you guessed it…rice and beans! After group devotionals and praying for the girls who came to camp. We were able to go to the girls’ village and see if anyone was out and about. We saw several of the girls and were able to say hello, give them a hug, and leave them with a small gift. It was really fun to be able to see where the girls lived and what their houses were like. After visiting with the girls we drove to the nearest town, Rivas. There we went to…

The next day, we rotated with the same four activities: swimming, free time, and one last bible study. After a yummy lunch of fried chicken and gallo pinto, we had free time with the girls, which they seemed to love. Some wanted to swim, while others wanted to do their nails and make bracelets. It was the perfect time to relax and enjoy being with them! The last festivity before they went home was a pinata. They got so excited to both hit the pinata and gather the candy afterward. They cheered each other on and kept yelling “higher” or…

The girls arrived Thursday morning by pick-up truck. While we waited for everyone to arrive, we had fun playing tic-tac-toe and soccer and doing puzzles and jump ropes with the girls. Although we could not communicate well, this was a fun time to bond with the girls. They were quiet at first, even around the translators, but began to open up as we played games with them and got to know them. After lunch, we sang some Spanish songs with the girls, and then we all went swimming. The girls loved playing with everyone in the water. This was a…

Everyone had brought down school supplies in their luggage to give away to the girls, along with what we needed to run camp. After sorting everything out, we broke up into groups to learn the different activities we would be leading. Our translators learned the activities they would be helping translate and then taught us Father Abraham and This Little Light of Mine in Spanish so we could sing it with the kids. Some of us caught on faster than others, but it was a lot of fun to learn! After we were done getting everything set up it was…

Tuesday was a long travel day to Nicaragua but full of anticipation! Due to availability, we had to split into two groups on two separate flights from JFK, New York, to Panama City. The first group had a seven hour layover which was filled with crossword puzzle relays, exploring the airport and Zora’s kleenex box may have gotten thrown into a few crowds. Once the second group joined us it was a happy reunion as all 27 of us took over the gate as we waited for our flight to board. After landing in Managua, Nicaragua we had no problems…

If you’ve been around Mt. Gilead for any amount of time, you’ve probably noticed that there’s something different about the people here (we call ourselves Gilead Girls). A deep bond of love and friendship runs through the staff and campers that is beautiful to watch and participate in. For parents and families who have not fully engaged in camp life, it can be hard to distinguish what exactly is different about the people at Mt. Gilead, so I asked our staff what it means to be a Gilead Girl. They shared with me what makes Gilead Girls unique and what…

We know that camp is a time filled with exciting activities, silly adventures, and spiritual growth, but sometimes to get a better idea of how fantastic camp is, you just need to hear it from the campers! Way back in June, we surveyed our campers to find out what Mt. Gilead meant to them. We found out that Tucker beat out all the competition to become the favorite camp animal, that Mt. Gilead is known as a safe place where campers can be themselves, and so much more! At Mt. Gilead, we have four different age groups of campers: Adventurers…
